As a child, Claire Garden spent summers on her grandparents' Iowa farm where she rode Flash, Bingo, and Pet. She has taught English at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, served as copy director for seed catalogs in Yankton, South Dakota., and labored as a landscaper near Wichita, Kansas. As a "back-to-the-land homesteader" in Kansas, she gardened organically and raised goats and chickens. 

  Later she joined a large egalitarian community in the Missouri Ozarks and has visited several other intentional communities in Missouri and Kansas. Currently living in a small egalitarian community in Columbia, Missouri, she understands this alternative lifestyle that reaches for utopia, though often falls short.
