Virginia Woolf was born Virginia Stephen in London on January 25, 1882. She was educated by her father, Sir Leslie Stephen, and after his death she made her
home in Gordon Square in Bloomsbury. She married Leonard Woolf in 1912. Together they founded Hogarth Press as a publisher for her books.
Her first novels -- The Voyage Out (published in 1915) and Night and Day (1919) -- were praised by the critics, but she was dissatisfied with them and

began to experiment with stream-of-consciousness writing. Woolf's first such work was Jacob's Room (1922) followed by Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931).
Between the Acts (1941) was her last novel. During a period of emotional disturbance, she drowned herself in Sussex on March 28, 1941.
